Three-month-old Star and Denver were once a part of a litter of shelter puppies abandoned in Louisiana but are now living in San Diego. The reason they are there is very special. Star is deaf and blind so her brother, Denver, appointed himself as her service dog.
At first, the adorable white puppies appear like totally normal pups playing in their kennel, chasing toys, and cuddling together in their bed. But when you take a closer look, it’s clear that Denver has appointed himself as caretaker of his cute little sister.
He carefully watches out for Star and gently cares for her since she can’t see or hear anything going on around her. He has appointed himself as her guide dog to make sure she is safe and can live life to the fullest, just like any other fun-loving puppy.
Jackie Kelleher, the social media manager at the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) where the puppies are now living said:
“Denver will run over to Star when she seems disoriented and checks in with her. They enjoy playing with each other, playing tag, using rope toys, and chewing on teddy animals.”
Denver is constantly looking out for his baby sis. He makes sure she is constantly aware that he is nearby. He helps and guides her to make sure that she is secure and never alone. He leads and directs her just as though he was trained to do so.
Kelleher went on to say:
“Star can scent him as well, and if she gets lost, she will circle the room until she finds him. While the puppies are now secure, if it weren’t for the compassion of strangers, things would have gone very differently.”
Originally, Star and Denver were part of a litter of eight puppies abandoned in rural Louisiana. Fortunately, the mom and pups were discovered and taken in by a couple who found them. They fostered the family but when the puppies were old enough to stop nursing, the couple gave them to a rescue so they could be placed in forever homes.
Since it’s hard to find homes for dogs living in rural Louisiana, especially for special needs dogs, Star and Denver were transported to the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. The HWAC is helping them find a home where they can stay together.
The shelter doesn’t intend to separate the puppies since Star and Denver are so bonded. Even though Star behaves independently, she still needs her big brother’s guidance and protection due to her disabilities.
