A strange pair snuggled together near the corner of the pavement in Watts, California, their ragged leashes set aside as if they had been thrown away like trash. It had been cold last night, and the two; one large girl and one young girl, kept each other warm and safe.

It’s not like rescuer Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, who arrived on Wednesday to assist catch the dogs, was taken aback. The number of dogs abandoned has climbed rapidly, and each example is arguably more terrible than the last.

This rescue situation was unique; in fact, Suzette was pleased by their desire to be saved and readiness to come forward. The dogs were overjoyed when she initially arrived, as if to say, “someone finally came.”

The two dogs – a pit bull mix and a Yorkshire terrier mix – had been in the neighborhood for days, and no one knew who they were. Someone had just left them to their own devices?

The small puppy ran towards Suzette, eager to be caught up and placed in the safe arms of her rescuer. The big girl then just wanted to be with her companion. Suzette had no intention of abandoning her.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A BOND LIKE THIS BEFORE. IT DID NOT TAKE LONG FOR THEM TO BE TOGETHER IN MY VAN. THEY WAGGLED THEIR TAILS AND WERE LITERALLY OVERJOYED.

WITH THEIR EYES, THEY SAID “SOMEONE DID COME” AGAIN.

The two snuggled close to each other on the way home, weary but making sure they could touch. They were eager to offer kisses, to be fed, and to go to the veterinarian for checkups, immunizations, and any evidence of identification.

Both dogs are really friendly. The Yorkie’s coat is matted, and the pittie has skin problems. For these two adorable puppies, all of this will one day be just a distant memory.

‘He’s a survivor’: dog reunited with family months after they fled wildfires

A dog named Kingston is back with his family 101 days after he jumped out of their truck as they fled a devastating northern California wildfire.

The 12-year-old Akita was reunited Monday with the Ballejos family, who fled the town of Paradise late last year, the Sacramento television station KXTV reported.

“When I found out, [it] just about brought me to tears,” said Gabriel Ballejos, Kingston’s owner. “I’m so proud of him. I can’t believe it. He’s a true survivor, and it’s a testament to the American spirit.”

Ballejos said they never lost hope and kept posting flyers and contacting shelters.

“Every night I would ask my dad and tell him that we needed to go look for him,” said Ballejos’s daughter, Maleah.

The family got a call after an animal rescue volunteer, Ben Lepe, trapped Kingston on Sunday and took him to Friends of Camp Fire Cats, a local rescue group. The volunteers saw a missing dog message on Facebook and contacted the family.

Lepe said the large dog had been spotted on surveillance cameras and that he set up a trap big enough for it on Saturday.

“When I went to check it on Sunday, there he was,” Lepe said. “It was awesome to see him and know he would be fed and warm.”

Family members believe Kingston survived by eating skunks, because he hunted them before the fire and smelled of skunk when they picked him up.

The town of Paradise was leveled by an 8 November blaze that killed 85 people and destroyed nearly 15,000 homes in the area.

Angel Herrera, of Friends of Camp Fire Cats, said the group has rescued more than 200 lost pets since the fire and still sets traps.

“If we had the resources, we could trap 50 animals every single night,” she said.

Firefighters Finally Reach Deaf Dog Trapped in Storm Drain After 10 Hours of Trying

If you judge a city’s heart by how much they’re willing to go the extra mile even for its non-human citizens, Arlington in Texas recently proved that things really are bigger in the Lone Star State.

When Zoey, a 15-year-old deaf Lab mix wandered away from her home, practically the whole community turned out to help find her.

“I had put on NextDoor app, we’re missing our dog… and people were like, ‘Here’s my number. Call me and I will come help you find [her],’” dog mom Andrea Tankersley told WFAA.

“The difficult part is she’s deaf,” dog dad Brennan Tankersley added. “So we’re calling out to her, calling out to her, of course knowing it’s not any good but you can’t help it.”

Searchers reported hearing dog sounds but were unable to figure out where they were coming from. Two days later, city water crews homing in on her echoing barks located Zoey trapped in a muddy storm drain under a city street.

A water department camera was set up to monitor Zoey’s condition in the tunnel as a herculean rescue effort coordinated by Arlington’s fire department, police, paramedics, and city workers was quickly mounted to free the trapped canine.

Using jackhammers, pneumatic saws, and heavy equipment, crews worked tirelessly in extreme heat conditions to break up the pavement and dig down to the concrete drain pipe below. Throughout the excavation, neighbors supplied workers with food and beverages to keep them going.

Nearly 10 hours later, a section of the top of the culvert was lifted away to reveal the watery channel. Once they had access, rescuers still had to come up with a way to get Zoey safely out of the confined tunnel space.

When one firefighter posed the idea of rolling her out on a skateboard, a kindergartener named Hunter volunteered his board for the cause.

(The skateboard, autographed by the fire and police personnel who helped out in the rescue is set to be presented back to the little boy with a big thank you from everyone involved.)

At 11 hours and counting, rescuers finally pulled Zoey from the concrete pipe to cheers and applause from an elated crowd of onlookers. The pooped pooch was passed, bucket-brigade style, up to the street where waiting emergency workers assessed her and then reunited her with the Tankersleys and their kids.

Amazingly, although she was scuffed up and understandably distressed, Zoey suffered no major ill effects from her ordeal, and after getting an all-clear from the vet is happy to be back home.

“It has been amazing,” Police officer Kristi Weil who was on the scene told WFAA.

“Everyone has been so helpful. There have been cheers of joy and tears when Zoey was rescued… I love seeing the community turn out and cheer a successful end to this—and for a family to have their beloved pet returned to them at the end of the day.”

We’re glad this doggone, dog-found deep-in-the-heart-of-Texas tale had a happy ending too.
